The US House Turning Its Back on Health and the Environment

Friday, September 15, 2017

Washington, D.C. - Yesterday the US house of Representatives passed its bill to fund the federal government through next year. This bill puts families and communities at risk by gutting funding for the Environmental Protection Agency.

Clean Water Action President and CEO, Bob Wendelgass released the following statement:

"The Republican leadership in the House of Representatives has failed Americans once again by turning their backs on families and handing out giveaways to polluters. This bill continues Republicans shameful tradition of cutting funding for the agency tasked with protecting human health and the environment, making even deeper cuts than in previous years. This would make it much harder for EPA's experts and dedicated staff to protect clean water and clean air, putting communities across the nation at risk. "

"EPA is already facing staff shortages due to Administrator Pruitt's campaign to hollow out the agency through layoffs and buyouts. This dangerous  budget would enable further staff cuts and hobble the agency even further. It reduces grants to states and tribes to help them safeguard water and public health, slashes efforts to fight climate change, and damages EPA's ability to conduct vital research on emerging threats to our water, air, and health."

"After the recent Hurricanes, wildfires, and floods, the last thing Republicans should do is kneecap the people who are dedicated to protecting our health and water. Americans count on EPA to take action to safeguard our environment and families - this outrageous budget will make it harder for the EPA to live up to Americans' expectations."
