PROVIDENCE – Clean Water Action jumped into the 2022 gubernatorial primary today and announced their endorsement of Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea for governor.

“Secretary Gorbea shares many of Clean Water Action’s environmental priorities including achieving the goals set in the ‘Act on Climate,’ developing our state’s renewable energy economy, incentivizing the development of sustainable housing, and making our cities and towns more resilient to the impacts of climate change,” said Jed Thorp, RI State Director for Clean Water Action. “In addition, she supports legislative efforts to reduce plastic consumption and plastic waste including a beverage container deposit program and Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging. Secretary Gorbea understands the complex environmental problems that Rhode Island faces, and we’re confident that she will be a strong leader in working for equitable solutions that make Rhode Island stronger, cleaner, and healthier.”

Nellie Gorbea’s campaign released a plan this morning that details the steps she will take as Governor to combat climate change.

Thorp added, “With the continued lack of sufficient action at the federal level, states must take the lead on fighting the climate crisis and transitioning to a renewable energy future. To meet this moment, Rhode Island needs a leader like Secretary Gorbea who will prioritize tackling climate change and position our state as a national clean energy leader.”

Clean Water Action’s field canvass will be talking to their members door-to-door between now and Election Day about the candidates they have endorsed this cycle. Clean Water Action has over 50,000 members in Rhode Island.

This is Clean Water Action’s second 2022 endorsement announcement following an earlier round of previously-endorsed incumbents. The organization will be releasing additional endorsements in state and local races in the coming weeks.

Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table.
